I might well be wrong, but I suspect this is a clay mineral formation (an unusual nodule). Something about it just doesn't 'feel' right for a sponge...

Some sort of Chlamys species, but I'm not sure which one (there are hundreds). Whereabouts were they collected? And have you got a rough idea of how old they are...???

It certainly has the look of petrified wood, but I'm 100% with Fossicker and Elbert on this: it's an oyster.

It's not the best preservation, as Chalk ammonites are generally a bit poor, but I found this one last Sunday...

My biggest ammonite so far - a 49 cm (probable) Parapuzosia austeni:
