Plant fossils, what species?

Bericht door patrick ichthyosaurs » 04 apr 2021, 14:26

Here is a collection of fossils from the ballagan formation, southern scotland on the east side.

Does anyone know what type of plants these could be.

What about the tractor tyre like one in the red sandstone, is that a plant.

Based on what I could find about the Ballagan Fm., these rocks are Tournasian to Visean in age (Mississippian, Lower Carboniferous). Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with plants from this period (and, frankly, I wouldn't even want to rule out that some of the imprints you're showing are actually faunal remains). It might be worthwhile to look for papers of A.G. Long; he has worked extensively on the plant fossils of the former "Cementstone Group".
