Hello all,
Been away abroad for some work (has to be done) so a late reaction.
I very much like both the reactions form Steph and Gunther. Why? Because they both have a point and it is 180 degrees opposite of each other. In my opinion it is just these differences that make this tooth so interesting.
It is simply impossible to jump to any conclusion I think. On the other hand: Steph earlier mentioned that the largest 'real symphysair' teeth that are known are about 3 cm wide. This one is slightly smaller. This plus the doubt about the pathological 'issue' might lead to the conclusion that it is a symphysair... Or is this way too a bold a conclusion

(Also interesting: apart from me few guys have had the chance of seeing it for real, exept Gunther and Robin (carcharias) on the Antwerp-fair. I am curious what their 'feeling' about this tooth is. It is absolutely non-scientifical of course, just curious

I like to response on your invitation.
I had the opportunity of seeing the subject
for real on the day it was found.
I realise that I am preoccupied in finding a
"zonnetje".
So everything what looks like it, I think it is one.
I was very suprised by the discussion that followed on your anouncement of the finding.
As a 'greeny' on the subject of determination
I must say that Steph brought doubt in my mind.
He has some arguments that make good sense.
My feeling still say its a 'zonnetje' but if an authority on the subject gives as his final opinion that it is not, I can live with it, knowing that it is still a special tooth every one likes to find.

Natuurlijk! Had ik helemaal niet aan gedacht, maar jij was een van de eersten die na lange tijd ( ) oog op dit bijzondere exemplaar kon leggen. Inderdaad: ik twijfel ook - met name wat betreft de grootte; het lijkt me onwaarschijnlijk, maar niet uitgesloten dat een symphysaire tand van deze soort zo groot wordt (en dat ik hem dan net vind).
Het zou inderdaad prettig zijn als er definitief uitsluitsel over werd gegeven maar ik heb geen contacten in 'echt' deskundige kring op dit gebied. Misschien kan iemand ons daarin verder helpen?
En je laatste opmerking is natuurlijk niet meer dan terecht: 't is gewoon een heel bijzonder ding om te vinden, of het nou een symphysaire is of niet!

now, I 100% percent agree that the solution of this riddle is not possible with absolute sureness. You are completely right in saying that the size is no argument in this case ( I think I wrote that somewhere before, didn´t I? ).
As I said, it would be super to see this tooth in reality once...
And this topic was not in the determination-sector, but for general discussion;)
Anyway, I think it was a really nice topic running on a very high level of quality ( higher level than most of the other forum topics, if I may be honest and subjective ) and I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks to all those who took part!

I have to admit that I wanted to "provoke" ( in a positive way ) a little bit in order to see what other opinions about that topic are out there, and if there are maybe more teeth like that existing which I don´t know yet.hovaderm schreef:

Dag Forumleden,
Ik kon het niet laten deze toe te voegen. Beide fragmenten verzamelden we (met nog wel wat ander materiaal gelukkig) de afgelopen weken op dezelfde lokatie.
Het grappige is vooral dat ze juist niets bewijzen, maar eerder voor meer verwarring zorgen omdat je er ook twee kanten mee uit kunt: fragmenten van grote symphysaire tanden, of juist fragmenten van pathologische exemplaren? Opnieuw: wie het weet mag het zeggen, maar ik voel voor beide opties even veel. Wel een grappig toeval trouwens in het licht van de vondst van die eerste tand.
