Mammal bones from Selzerbeek
Mammal bones from Selzerbeek
We found these in the Selzerbeek water at spots between Mamelis and Wahlwiller.
1 is 27cm long, hollow for more than half its length, and it looks like textures inside of porous bone.
2 is 15cm long, and appears to have a denser structure than 1.
3 is also around 15cm long and looks like a piece of rib bone.
The site has reports of pre-historic mammal finds, and we presume that's what these are. Any information much appreciated!

Re: Mammal bones from Selzerbeek
1 looks like a metatarsus or metacarpus horse
2 looks like a metatarsus or metacarpus Bovid/cattle
3 looks indeed like rib
a check in the hand however could give other results;-)

Re: Mammal bones from Selzerbeek
There's has always been stock breeding in that small villages. Thus you can find quite recent bones, perfectly sawed by at least a handsaw, but also pre-historic specimens in the Selzerbeek. It is difficult to determine the age of these bones on the basis of images, but it is likely that they are not fossils and that they are remains of domestic animal (cattle, horse, dog etc.). But anyway, these are always interesting finds.
Best wishes,
