Hi everybody,

since I started collecting shark teeth on the beach I sometimes find some
mermaids purses and learned on the internet that they eggs from sharks
or rays but on saturday I found this huge on and would like to know
from what species it is? Any ideas?

Regards from Cape Town

Hi Werner,

There are always people who think they are funny!
I already started a topic with a message for the webmasters to do something about it.
Most people on the forum are realy serious busy with fossils.
So I hope someone can tell you of which shark or (I think it's a) ray it is.

Greetings,

Jan

Hi Werner,

Hammerhead is right, we find similar Ray eggs on our beach, only a little smaller ;)
Hope this helps, because I cant help you with the exact species. If I do find out, I will let you know.

Regards,
Jerry

In my opinion too its an egg of a ray (in view of the size perhaps Raja brachyura).

Greetings
Jan

Thank's Guy's for your comments,
I let you know when I found out to which
species the egg belong's but it is
not Meg:-).
You should read the jokes at "the Fossil Forum"about the egg case,Megalodon is the first name that comes to mind:-).

Could be a Dipturus batis Blue Skate
the egg cases on the website look the same.

Could be, but I'm not sure. There are several species of rays of wich the eggs have a comparable size.

According to size and location the first picture could be a thornback ray (seen several that look exactly like this, even the size is comparable)

In my opinion this is an egg-case of the spearnose skate, Raja alba
The other egg cases look like eggs of the spiny-tailed Skate, Raja barnardi.
