Really strange. Any Ideas?
Really strange. Any Ideas?

Hi All, I found this on the beach of Katharinenhof on the east cost of the Fehmarn island. I have no Idea what it could be!
Re: Really strange. Any Ideas?
This is unusual, it looks like a seed pod or a cone. If it is a cone it may have been polished in the sea and lost its overall structure. What age do you think it is - perhaps the age of nearby cliffs?

Thank you for your answer. This cliff of the Island of Fehrman in the Baltic should contain, as I read on a German Webpage, fossils of the lower Eocene period :(Terraston. Something like London clay)snail, wood or palmfruits. But I cannot think of any of them because I cannot find any structure on it.
And you are right. It is very smooth and stone heavy.

Re: Really strange. Any Ideas?

Does the fossil have a rounded area at each end which may be the residue of a stem. If so - it is a cone similar to the one shown. It is certainly unusual and I have not found anything quite like it in my own library of papers. Polished specimens are always difficult to identify.
It may also be a deferred fossil - a much older fossil that has been worn and re-deposited at a new site to be exposed again - difficulty if that is the case.

I try to make a better photo of both extremitities. If it is a cone, it is not regular like in the picture you have found but more curved at one side.

I think it`s the rolled part (center?) of a concretion that has a beautiful egg-shape.
Probably a pseudo-fossil, but a fine easter present!
