In Fossils of the Gault Clay wordt ook gesproken over Macropoma net als de facebookpagina van fossiles du Boulonnais inderdaad.

Dat lijkt meer uit conventie te zijn dan wat anders. Uit 'Fossils of the chalk' (Smith & Batten 2002), een verhelderend stukje tekst:
"Objects like (pl 63, fig 4) were at first interpreted as fossil fir cones.(...) Buckland showed that similar fossils of Lyme Regis matched cement casts of the large intestines of living sharks, where the spiral valve imparts a characteristic structure of concentric cones. (...) The chalk coprolites are conventionally assigned to the Coelacanth Macropoma, though Woodward remarked that they could as well come from sharks of chimaeroids."

Er komt nog een stukje discussie achter, maar de idee is dat het van haaien, chimaera's of van niet-teleotische beenvissen kan komen, met haaien als de voornaamste kandidaat. Er zijn immers nooit in situ associaties van deze coproliet met coelacanthen gevonden, en de overeenkomst met de gecementeerde afgietsels van Buckland lijkt het voornaamst argument om richting haai te denken.
Daarnaast is er ook discussie of het werkelijk coprolieten zijn dan wel opvullingen van de darm ('enterospirae').
