You're right, from what I can see on the photo, this is not petrified wood. I have over 50 samples in my collection, of which only a few do not show growth rings (e.g. palmwood, which shows other textures, like dotted patterns). Congrats! Based on the spongy structure in the centre, I think you've found bone. What kind of animal it was, I wouldn't know, you should take it to a specialist to find that out.
That's good to know! I've been to the Tremp basin for my study two years ago. But I was in the impression that it all was a protected area (would not surprise me; it being such a special place, geologically speaking). You're very lucky to live so close by! I loved being at Tremp and I'll surely come again!
