I must thankyou for getting in touch and apologise for not replying sooner, but I have been thinking about your interesting discovery.

Having looked closely at your photo, and asked colleagues for an opinion, I don’t think it is a sea pen (or related). It seems to me more like a slightly distorted ammonite keel impression, or perhaps an ammonite aptychus? It is certainly enigmatic and it’s always difficult to tell from a photograph.

By all means, if you wish to collect it with care then please do so. I know Mike Marshall and I am sure he would be able to help.

I would be very interested if you discover more about this specimen, and of course if you have any further questions about collecting on the Yorkshire Coast then don’t hesitate to ask.

Wauw, toch wel spannend. En hoewel het nu toch mogelijk geen zeeveer lijkt te zijn, blijft er toch nog een waaier aan mogelijkheden open. Ik ben benieuwd of je eruit geraakt. Ga je het fossiel kunnen bergen?

Hallo Frederik, ondanks dat een zeeveer fossiel de deskundigen onwaarschijnlijk voorkomt, ben ik tamelijk zeker van mijn zaak en verwacht aardig stormachtige reacties als blijkt dat ik het bij het rechte eind heb; heel mischien halen we het 6 o clock news er wel mee...

Mike Marshall heeft toegezegd zijn best te doen om het stuk voor me te fotograferen en bergen en als er iemand is die dat ding terug kan vinden, is hij het wel...

Wel, dat belooft!

Ik heb de discussie op discussfossils eens kort doorgenomen. Daar worden toch al wat argumenten links en rechts tegen elkaar gezet. Als ik Ockham's scheermes hanteer neig ik stilletjes toch ook richting de Pinna hypothese (of 'crushel shell').

Met uiteraard de nodige slag om de arm, gezien ik het fossiel zelf uiteraard niet gezien heb (dat geeft jou een tactisch voordeel). Bovendien ben ik ervan overtuigde dat jij de nodige expertise hebt om vreemde zaken als vreemd te herkennen als ze zich aandienen.

Wel vind ik het idee van conservat-lägerstatten bewaring van het niveau om een zeepen te bewaren, op die site eerder vergezocht.

Héél benieuwd of men het gaat kunnen bergen, en wat het dan zou kunnen zijn!

Hallo, heb me op de hoogte gesteld van het begrip conservat lagerstatten.
Kreeg vanavond deze reactie van dr. Mike Howarth, DE deskundige op het gebied van o.a.de stratigrafie van de Lias in Yorkshire.
De man van al die publicaties en een beetje mijn held, op paleontologisch vlak dan...
Inmiddels dik in de tachtig, maar nog immer actief voor het BMNHUK:

Dear Mr Roodenburg,

I was at the Natural History Museum yesterday and read your email about this fossil from Port Mulgrave.

It is difficult to interpret your photograph without a scale to indicate its size – i.e. what is the approximate length of the specimen? I do not know of any ammonite in the Hawskerense Subzone of which it could be part, but is it part of an Aptychus or a pair of Aptychi? Pleuroceras occurs at this horizon,and such Amaltheids have a single-valved Anaptychus, which have striae or coarse folds on the surface and a division in the middle of the single shell. Otherwise, I think you have to consider other possibilities – is it part of a squid-like animal, or even a fish?

I think it is necessary to handle the specimen in order to determine it. If you can get it collected and sent to the Museum, I am sure we can give you an opinion on its determination.
