Dear Lutz,
Thanks for your reply. Well appreciated! I understood from Pieter that you were working on it and I was hoping for your reaction.

I'm glad to see that amateur hunters enable science to support the evicence of these symphysial teeth. As you mentioned, we have the fossil proof of the existance of these teeth, it only hasn't been documented due to various reasons such as the fact that these teeth aren't as common as some may think.

Is there any paper that describes the exchange rate of symphysial teeth? I can imagine that when these smaller teeth are surrounded by bigger anteriors that they are far less exposed to the risk of break-out when feeding on prey. I also noticed that the rooth-crown ratio is much more in favour of the rooth as compared to the anteriors and the laterals. This may also be a reason that the bigger rooth has a stronger hold in the jaw? Could this also be the case with the posteriors (less exposure to pressure when feeding, more robust rooth).

anyway, these are just my thoughts and are only (I repeat: only), speculations from a novel like me.

Regards,
Arjen

Hi folk, to provoke a bit more confusion, I found/got teeth which aren't neither posterior nor symphyseals in Otodontidae, they have very much similarities with intermediates from Sandtigers (i.e. Carcharias taurus; not the smaller upper third anterior of Lamnids, more like SIVERSON and APPLEGATE at least described (teeth which grow on the chondral-bar between anteriors and laterals in the upper jaw)! What does it mean -- Megalodon and other Otodontidae has a sandtiger-like jaw!? More to search for!!! Lutz ;-))
